I’ve read romance novels since I was a thirteen year old living outside Nuremburg, Germany with my family. I started with Barbara Cartland’s (ooh how I loved those wicked dukes and earls and titles like The Impetuous Duchess!) and progressed on to Mills & Boon romances and then Harlequins and then historical romances by authors like Kathleen Woodiwiss.
But Harlequins were a huge love of mine and I started trying to write my first Harlequin romance for Harlequin when still a senior in high school. I wasn’t very good at it but I was serious and started submitting to both the London and Toronto office in 1983, and then again in 1987, and 1988 and 89….and all the way until I finally sold in 2000. You all know my story–took me some 15 years and 13 rejected manuscripts–to get that first sale, The Italian Groom, but along the way I learned determination, craft, dedication and self-esteem.
I’ve now written 25 books for Harlequin and will be writing several more for Harlequin Presents later this year (must get baby out first!) but Harlequin has big news of their own. While the Mills & Boon office in London celebrated their 100th anniversary last year, this year Harlequin celebrates their 60th anniversary, and boy are they celebrating.
