Montana

Bozeman, Montana was awesome.  Had an amazing time there these past few days.  I loved meeting with Kari Andersen’s Mia Bella group and Ty and I so enjoyed exploring the area.  As snow fell we drove to Big Sky and West Yellowstone and saw tons of wildlife, although Mac’s favorite animals were the horses his dad let him pet.

Right now we’re at the Seattle airport getting ready to board our connecting flight to San Diego.  I loved the beautiful crisp weather in Montana but am looking forward to the warmer temperatures in Southern California.  Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!  Much love to all.

Mac’s 1st Birthday & Screening Fun

It’s been a very busy few days!  Sunday was the screening for Christine Fugate’s powerful, wonderful, uplifting film, grief becomes me:  a love story.  We had well over one hundred people attend the screening and absolutely wonderful food and drink with some of my favorite people in the world.  A truly special day, especially as we earned $600 for Hopelink for their summer programs.  The beautiful Vera Bradley store at the Bellevue Square mall donated the swag bags everyone got to take home, Christine donated her DVDs of her film, and I donated my books and through everyone’s generous purchases we ended up having fun and raising money for an important local charity.

And then if the screening wasn’t wonderful enough, Monday was Mac’s first birthday!  We celebrated with a small party of family and close friends.  I made 3 huge lasagnes, garlic bread and salad and since we’re still short on furniture, carried in the picnic table for seating in the empty family room.  Mac’s had a cold since last Thursday and was a tad miserable at moments with his runny nose, but definitely enjoyed being the center of attention.  I can’t believe he’s one already!

Mac's 1st Birthday

Tomorrow Mac, Surfer Ty and I head to Montana for three days where I’ll join Kari Andersen’s wonderful Mia Bella group before doing a 7 pm book signing Saturday night at the Bozeman Barnes & Noble.  Sunday we’ll fly from Bozeman to San Diego to have an early Mother’s Day with Ty’s mom in Oceanside.

I have five special Vera Bradley guest gifts to give away from Sunday’s screening along with some of my JP reader goodies.  Want to win one?  Bring me up to speed on your life and your plans for the weekend in the comments below and you’re entered!  I’ll draw the five winner’s names Monday morning so please check back on Monday to see if you’ve won.  Have a great weekend everyone and now I better go pack!

Our Hawaii Get-Away for Brenda’s Auction!

So very excited….Brenda Novak’s amazing annual auction to raise money for diabetes research is almost here!  The auction kicks off May 1st and is going to be spectacular.  I’ve been browsing the list of items available and have ear marked several things I want to bid on–and win!

As most of you know, I always donate something to the auction and I’ve put together a couple things for her auction again this year, including a week stay at the Ty Gurney Surf & Stay Beach House.  It’s a fun, fantastic package, perfect for a writer’s retreat, romance, or a girl friend getaway.

I’ll post links to all the items I’m donating next week just before the auction goes live, but in the meantime, check out the video and feel free to shoot me with any questions you might have about the Hawaii trip!   I’d love to see one of you enjoing the aloha!

Sunday Film Screening in Redmond

If you’re in the Greater Seattle area and haven’t yet gotten your invite to the private screening I’m hosting for my friend, Christine Fugate’s new film, Grief Becomes Me, please know that I’d love for you to join me!  Invites were mailed two weeks ago but inevitably invites get lost, or people move or I’ve failed to get someone added to my revised mailing list, so if you’re one of my readers or friends who would enjoy the Sunday afternoon screening, please come.  I still have 15-20 spaces left, and you’re more than welcome to bring a friend.  I just need an RSVP so I can keep track of seats available in Redmond’s gorgeous Big Picture movie theatre.

Christine will be flying up on Saturday from Laguna Beach for the screening and we’re going to show the twenty minute film, then have a discussion that covers her work, the film industry, and women and creativity.  After the discussion ends we’ll be sipping wine and snacking on yummy appetizers and desserts in the plush lounge.   I will also have copies of my books for sale in case you want to pick one up as a Mother’s Day gift.

Check out the invite, look at your calendar, and do join us if you can!

Portland Romance Reader Luncheon

I had a fantastic time in Portland, OR on Saturday attending the Portland Rose Chapter’s fantastic 10th anniversary Romance Reader Luncheon where I gave this year’s keynote speech.  Two hundred readers and writers attended the lunch in the beautiful, historic Governor’s Hotel ballroom and I took gift bags for all with my JP reader goodies and a signed copy of Flirting with Forty.

Lots of Seattle and Portland writer friends were there on Saturday, as well as two fellow Harlequin Presents authors, Lucy Monroe, and new author, Maisey Yates, who will have her first book out in the US this November.  Lucy looked gorgeous in pink and has a brand new book out, and Maisey shared a little with me about her very busy publishing schedule.

As soon as I have more photos I promise to get them added.  In the meantime, I’ve giving away a gift bag of romance novels, books marks, and other goodies for one die-hard romance reader.  If you’d like to win this bag of books and fun stuff, tell me what kind of romance you like to read and why, or tell me who your favorite romance writer is and you’re entered.  Romance Reader Luncheon blog contest will run through Wednesday night and I’ll announce the winner Thursday morning.  Good luck!

Surf Shop Party

Well, I promised the pics from the party and here they are!  You can find a ton more on Ty’s surf school facebook page as well as various other places, but I wanted to share a few of my favorites here.  It was a great party—although on the hot (sweltering?) side–but so fun to see all of Ty’s friends there.

Also as promised–a fun contest for those of you who don’t live in Hawaii.  I’ve got two of the swag bags from the opening night celebration, plus chocolate macadamia nuts, plus coffee, plus more good stuff that I know you’ll love.  How to win?  Just post a comment and tell me how you’re doing or what you’re reading and that’s it–you’re entered!  Contest will run through Saturday night midnight PST and I’ll announce the two winners Sunday morning.  Good luck and aloha!

Mac

It’s Saturday and Mac and I just spent the afternoon hanging out in his dad’s board shop in Waikiki.  Mac loves to be anywhere his dad is and the surf shop is especially exciting with all the surf instructors, music, visitors and activity.  Gracie, James’ bulldog, hangs out at the shop most days which makes Mac very happy, too.

The shop’s grand opening went great Thursday night.  Big turn out, lots of cool folks came by, lots of great food and drink and Ty was simply stoked.   I was so happy to see him so happy and thank all of you for your good wishes and support.

I’ve got a fun contest planned giving away some of Ty’s shop’s surf gear and party swag bags so keep an eye out for the blog post which should be coming  soon with pics, news, and some killer giveaways.  And until then, enjoy your weekend and know that Ty and I are so grateful to have you all as friends!

Ty’s Board Shop Grand Opening

I woke up at 5:30 am here in Hawaii this morning and thought–Ty’s Surf Shop party is in just two days. I have lots to do! Need to buy beer and wine and order appetizers. Need to find a linen table cloth and fun platters in case the caterers platters are ugly. Need to pull my books together and the swag bags for my readers. It’s going to be fun and a crush because the shop isn’t big but hey, who cares, as long as we’re all together!

If you’re in Waikiki on Thursday the 8th, do drop by Ty’s new Surf School & Board Shop and say hello. I’m going to be on hand and so will Ty and his crew. It’s going to be one fun Surf Party!

Easter Celebration

I grew up in the Episcopal Church, attending St. Paul’s in Visalia, and then the odd Bible Camp, crusade or revival when I could find one. I spent years doing correspondence bible courses after attending a Billy Graham crusade, and then at UCLA was rebaptized Easter Sunday my sophomore year at Santa Monica Beach in the Pacific Ocean because I worried that infant baptisms didn’t count. I carried my Bible around UCLA. Wouldn’t dream of going on a date without it. Was I the most popular girl at UCLA? Probably not.

For all my religious fervor, my family didn’t often attend church on Easter Sunday as we were rarely home Easter Sunday. Our Spring Break was usually at our ranch outside Paso Robles in the coastal foothills.  But just because we were at the ranch for Easter, it didn’t mean we didn’t have a church service. We did, and it was run by the kids. Well, run by me. We’d put on an Easter play or pageant, reenacting the events between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. I’d assign parts, select appropriate scripture, find hymns and then round up everyone to stand on the hillside for the worship service. My brother Thom’s best friends, Will and Charles Winn, were often there with us for Easter and so we’d have plenty of people for the roles of Herod, Christ, Pontius Pilate, Mary, soldiers, mourners.  I loved directing. I liked the good roles but could on occasion share. After the service, we’d hunt for the Easter eggs my dad hid on the property–eggs tucked in corral nooks, gopher holes, rocks by the stream, in low branches of massive oak trees.

I loved the ranch. I love the country. She’s Gone Country is an ode to my father and Texan grandfather’s love for the land, too. I can’t wait for the book to come out this summer and see what you all think, but in the meantime I thought ‘d give away the other book I wrote that features a ranch setting, The Secret, a book in the Harlequin continuity series called Cooper’s Corner. My book was one of four direct mail books, which means it was never sold retail and very few people read it but it’s a fun story—a mix of rugged cowboy and Hollywood glamour as my hero’s Nevada ranch is being used for a movie shoot. To celebrate my memories of Easter at our family ranch near Parkfield, California as well as this Easter in Hawaii (the 7th Easter anniversary since meeting Ty in 2004), I’m giving away 6 copies of The Secret, my Cooper’s Corner novel, a Starbucks drink card, and lots of JP reader goodies. Interested in winning my Easter Celebration prize? Tell me what you’re doing today, or share your favorite Easter tradition or celebration and you’re entered. I’ll draw 6 winners Wednesday morning. Good luck, and Happy, Happy Easter!

No Fools this April Fool’s Day

I’m just finishing my last minute packing before Mac and I dash out the door to catch our 4 pm flight to Hawaii.  It’s going to be wonderful to see Ty.  It’s been a month since we were all last together and that’s a lot of time for Ty to miss out on his baby boy’s life but Spring Break meant that Ty has needed to stay there and my kids and school has meant I’ve needed to stay here but twelve hours from now we’ll all be together again for the next 3 weeks.

As I finished cleaning off my desk and checking items off my to-do list I came across a blog post from my friend and fellow author Kristin Harmel.  I met Kristin, Liza Palmer and Megan Crane all through Grand Central Publishing.  We all wrote for the 5 Spot line and became great friends.

The thing about Kristin’s blog post that caught my eyes is that it was about her—and well, me.  As I read the blog I remembered exactly where and when it took place–the lobby bar of the swanky hotel I was staying at while attending the St. Petersburg Book Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Kristin and I were on a panel together and Kristin’s a native of the area and we were able to attend the welcome reception together and then spend the next day together as well.

I remember thinking at the time–this is a bit presumptious of me.  Who am I to suggest, much less tell, another writer how to write?

I remember her expression.  I remember my own sinking heart.  The why, oh why, did I open up this can of worms?  You see, I’m so damn honest and I do love the craft of writing.  If I can help make a book stronger, I want to.  If someone can help make my books stronger, I want that advice, too.  It’s not that writing is a team sport, but we can always grow and improve.

Today as I read Kristin’s blog, http://tinyurl.com/SGATC1 , I loved her message–we can always find ways to grow.  There is always something we can improve upon.  I know I want to improve on my terrible habit of procrastination, especially when it comes to writing.  Starting a new book, or facing the day’s pages, can create tremendous anxiety within me  and so I’ll often do anything and everything but actually write.  I’ll answer fifty email, write a speech, write a blog, put together a nine city book tour…but write?  Dig down inside me and face the scary face of failure?  To dig down inside and not come up with anything remotely good or interesting to say?  Ah, frightening!

I loved Kristin’s blog so much (and no, not just because it included stuff about me, but because it made me think about how I’m tired of continuing the same bad habits and really want to change) that I’m going to do a special double-blog contest prize.  Here’s how it works–read Kristin’s blog, and then  comment here on my blog that yes, you did read it, and answer the question she posts at the end of her blog and you’re entered in the Kristin Harmel/Jane Porter book giveaway.  I’ll be picking 1 name for every 10 blog entries.  So if 100 people posted, I’d pick ten winners.  And what’s the great prize?  A copy of Kristin’s awesome Italian for Beginners, a signed copy of one of my Easy On The Eyes, a Starbucks card, some chocolate and lots of JP reader goodies.  Contest will run through Monday night.  I’ll count up the comments and announce the winners Tuesday morning.  Ready to win?  Go read Kristin’s blog and comment below, and you’re entered!

And now I better finish packing because my wonderful Surfer Ty is waiting!
