Back in Bellevue

My little water baby is back in Bellevue and wrapped in warm winter threads, but his blue eyes and happy chortle remind me of Hawaii and the beaches and his dad.

Last night was a big night for Mac in other ways.  For the first time he slept in his crib in his own room and then proceeded to sleep through the night!  I spent the night staring at the baby monitor worried he needed me.  At five I finally got up and decided to start the day.  Mac, meanwhile, continues to dream away.

Now its time for me to turn my attention to writing.  I’ve a deadline approaching end of January and am already feeling the heat as I’ve got a wonderful premise for my story but not enough words on the page.  So as I return to my work outs, my writing sessions, and my determination to lose the rest of the baby weight, I’m curious–what are you hoping to do this month?  Any resolutions made?  Any personal goals?  I’m so glad the new year has arrived.  2009 meant the birth of Mac, but it was also very hard in other ways and I’m ready for change!

Share with me your goals or resolutions and you’re entered to win a surprise winter package that will be fun to open and I promise its something you’ll enjoy.  Blog contest will run through Thursday, Jan 7th at midnight PST and I’ll announce the winner Friday morning.  Hope this time it’ll be your turn to win!

Surfer Baby

Mac loves the water.  He’s always loved his baths but now he’s discovered the ocean and thinks its pretty awesome.  He’d never been all the way in until yesterday–just dipped up to his chest before–but in Waikiki while Jake and Krysia surfed with Ty, Kathy, little Ty and Mac and I hung out on the beach.  Kathy read.  (I’m so jealous….haven’t read a book since I arrived in Hawaii!)  Ty played in the surf.  And Mac and I chilled.

And then we went swimming.

Mac wasn’t sure about the waves at first.  But after a bit he enjoyed Mom holding him,  jumping around with him and helping him float on his back.  A couple times he drank some sea water, but he’d just wrinkle his nose then ultimately smile.

Worried about so much sun exposure, we went back under our beach umbrella where I lathered him up with more sun screen and then we returned to the water again with a sun hat.

Once more we played and he giggled and laughed, especially when his brother Ty swam over and dove in and under the water around us.  After awhile Mac stopped trying to yank off his sun hat.  But he hadn’t let go of it.  he was still holding tight to the brim.  I asked little Ty to look at Mac’s face and let me know what he was doing.

Ty bent down to look under the brim of Mac’s hat.  “His eyes are closed, Mom.”

“What?”

Ty peeked again.  “They’re closed.”

“He’s asleep?”  I’m incredulous.  We’re neck deep in the ocean and waves are breaking all around us.

“Yeah.”

I start laughing and carry him out of the water and back to our chairs beneath the umbrella where he sleeps in my arms until his dad returns from surfing.

I knew Mac was mellow and I knew he loved the water, but I had no idea just how mellow until now.

He’s definitely all Ty’s.  A true surf baby.

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!  May 2010 be the best yet.

Sun, Sea & Sand

The boys are here now, as is my sister Kathy and her daughter Krystyna.   The remodel on the beach house last year appears to have been a success as Kathy and Krysia (Krystyna’s nickname–her father’s from Poland, thus the spelling) love their little suite and are enjoying their visit very much.

I love having my sister here.  Never get to see her enough and my favorite vacations include her.  Two and a half years ago we took the kids to Europe for two weeks and five and a half years ago we took them on a Caribbean cruise after four days in Puerto Rico.  My sister and I grew up traveling quite a bit and it’s been important that we continue that tradition with our kids.  I’ve always said that I work to travel.  I’d rather spend my money on exploring the world than on fancy cars, clothes or jewelry.

Since Surfer Ty’s working a lot right now Kathy and I decided to take kids to Sandy’s Beach but I was worried about long hours in the sun for Mac, so we stopped off at City Mill, bought an Easy-Up tent, strapped it on the top of my little jeep, and headed to the beach with the kids, beach chairs and picnic lunch.  The great thing about my sister is that she’s fearless and strong.  Not afraid of anything.  I’ve always wanted a portable tent for the beach (I’m not a sun goddess…can’t read if I’m sweating…) but was always intimidated by the idea of actually lugging one onto the sand and trying to get it up.  Kathy says they do it for soccer games all the time so there we were, popping up our tent, burying the stakes in the sand and creating a perfect little oasis for our beach chairs and towels.  The only negative about our tent–a cool red one–is that it advertises City Mill in huge yellow letters on all four sides.  Not quite the image we were going for.

On the positive side, it was Mac’s first real outing to a proper beach and he loved the sand and hanging out on the beach towel playing with whatever objects he could find in my purse.   Kathy read her James Patterson novel on her Kindle and I was a tad envious of her Kindle and dropped a couple hints that a Kindle would be a great birthday present for me come February.  But in the meantime,  I was so happy with our patch of sand and our shade and the gorgeous sparkle of sun on the breaking surf.   I’m so lucky to have my family here.  It’s the best Christmas present I could hope for.

Did you get what you wanted for Christmas?  Was there something not in your stocking that you hoped for?  Fill me in and you’re entered to win a big box of Hawaii treats—coffee, chocolates, Macadamia nuts and much  more.  I guarantee you’ll love this gift.  Contest runs through midnight the 29th and I’ll announce the winner Thursday morning.

(Important info:  The winner will have one day to send me his/her info because I must mail box on Friday as I leave over the weekend to return to Seattle.   And by the way, my last two blog winners never sent me their addresses so if I don’t hear from them by Wednesday, I’ll add their amazing goodies to the pile and give their prizes away, too.  Please make sure you check to see you’ve won and if you do, it’s your job to email me.   With the kids, the travel, the writing and the blog updates I’ve found I can’t track down every winner, so please check back if you hope to win!! And get me your info.  Happy Holidays!!)

Naughty and Nice

Mac’s pretty excited about his first Christmas.  But it’s not the presents he loves.  It’s the wrapping paper.

Merry Christmas to all my wonderful readers and friends.  Hope your day is full of laughter and love.

Christmas in Hawaii

It’s Christmas Eve morning and I’ve got Kona coffee brewing and Mac playing with toys on the couch next to me.  President Obama and his family are supposed to be arriving on Oahu today, staying at a beach house over in Kailua which isn’t all that far from here.  Hawaii is so excited about its president coming ‘home’ for Christmas.  Can’t say I blame them.    Hawaii is a small place and pretty isolated.  It’s wonderful to have a president that comes home to Hawaii.

This year I gave up on buying real Christmas trees for the beach house.  Real trees are so expensive in Hawaii and they’re usually small and dead before you even get them decorated.  Instead I ‘invested’ in a big white tree that looks really fun and fresh in our house.  All the ornaments on the tree have a water, Hawaii, or tropical theme—glass balls with painted scenes of the islands, Santa on a surfboard, Santa in a surf jeep, Santa scuba diving, glass aloha shirts, hula girls, fish, fish, and more fish, as well as strung shells.   It’s a perfect tree for Hawaii and makes me smile everytime I look at it.

My boys, my sister Kathy, and her daughter Krystyna, don’t arrive until the 26th, which is when we’ll open packages and have a special meal.  In the meantime, Surfer  Ty is working today, doing a North Shore tour, and then plans to teach part day tomorrow, so it’s a low key holiday until the rest of my gang arrives but I like it.  I need it.  I’m slowly realizing Christmas isn’t about doing more, its about feeling more.  Feeling love.  Feeling peace.  Feeling gratitude.

So Merry Christmas to all.   And is anyone else looking forward to the new year?  I can’t wait.  But January means back to work as I’ve a novella due end of the month!

Romance Reader Luncheon on Oahu

It’s a gorgeous Tuesday morning in Hawaii and Christmas is just days away.  I spent yesterday doing nothing but relaxing after the hectic weekend of preparing for the lunch I hosted on Sunday for Kellie Chang’s Romance Reader Group.

We were supposed to have our lunch outside on the deck but it poured all night, cleared up in the morning, and then started to come down again about an hour before the lunch was to begin.  Surfer Ty’s good friend Tucker had agreed to act as my bartender for the party so he and I frantically (well, I was frantic, he wasn’t.  He is a surfer after all…) moved the big sectional against the ‘living room’ wall, carried out all the extra furniture including the row of barstools at the counter even as the caterer arrived, florist delivered flowers and guests began making early appearances.

One of the biggest treats for me at the luncheon was having friend and fellow Seattle author, Cherry Adair, in attendance.  I adore Cherry, but then everyone does, and having her at my home made the lunch truly festive.

Jane, Auntie Peaches, and Janelle.

Kellie Chang’s romance reader group is an amazing group of women.  We had about 27 at the lunch and I really enjoyed everyone’s warmth and kindness and love of books.  During the lunch I got to sit next to Auntie Peaches and what a wonderful lady!  So full of life and energy and spunk.  And as she’s a sheikh fan, I made sure she got a signed copy of one of my Presents featuring my Desert Kings.

Another treat was finally being able to meet a reader from Hawaii, Navy Cryptologic Technician Petty Officer First Class Janelle Wolf.  Janelle discovered me following one of my Hawaii events on the base last summer.   Janelle and I didn’t actually meet the day of the event, but she found my signed books just after the signing ended, bought two, and then later returned to buy the rest.  Now Janelle is one of my blog friends and real life friends and it was really fun having her at my house for the party…especially as Christmas Eve’s her birthday and Kellie brought candles for the cheesecake (a treat from Cherr) and we were able to sing to her.

Now I’m off to finish my Christmas shopping as my big boys will be flying in on the 26th to celebrate New Years with me.  I can’t wait to have them here.  Hawaii isn’t Hawaii without all my boys around me.  Fighting, loving, and generally making life crazy.

Are you ready for Christmas?  Have everything done, or is there something on your to-do list still?  Fill me in and you’re entered to win my delicious Hawaii gift basket packed with chocolates, coffee, macadamia nuts and so much more.  Contest closes tomorrow midnight, PST, and I’ll announce the winner Christmas Eve morning, so tell me where things stand and you’re that much closer to winning this incredible but bad for the diet gift basket!

Holiday Fun

We’ve had a fun first half of the month in Bellevue–shopping, ice skating, taking in the parade at Snowflake Lane in downtown Bellevue.    But now it’s time to pack up and head to Hawaii for Christmas.

By the time you read this we’ll be at our Hawaii home…

Wearing a heck of a lot less.  And Mac for one will be glad.

Happy happy holidays to all.  More soon from Hawaii!

Good Tidings

Yesterday afternoon I was zipping around the house, wrapping gifts, sealing up boxes I still needed to mail, organizing presents for Hawaii and it hit me—I felt happy.

Happy.

The real happy.  The happy where you smile easily and you tease with your kids and you walk with a little more energy.

And I realized it’d been a long, long time since I felt this way.  A year or more.  I didn’t feel “happy” during the pregnancy because I rarely felt good.  And then Mac was born and while I felt grateful baby was here, I also felt lost for quite awhile.  Those first seven months of Mac’s life I was just getting by but yesterday as I hummed and hustled up and down the stairs and knocked things off my to-do list, I truly felt…joyful.  I also felt thankful.  And lt blessed.

We can know in our heads that we’re lucky to have our family and friends, but its different when you actually feel it in your heart.  And what made me ‘feel’ it was action.  I did something that put me in the holiday spirit, that reminded me what the season is all about.  It’s about giving.  Giving thanks.  Giving love.  Giving hope.  Giving support.

I took my boys to Toys R Us Wednesday night and we filled a shopping cart with dream toys, the kind of toys my boys put at the top of their wish list when they were younger.  A massive heavy duty Tonka truck a toddler would love to push around the house.  A giant box of the newest Lego.  Action figures and packs of matchbox cars.  And then I asked two little girls to help me pick out toys girls would love and they showed me the Disney Princess section and handed me dolls and costumes and jewelry and tea sets and hair accessories and more.  Once we paid for our basket of toys we gave them all away and the minute we’d left them in the donation container, I wanted to go do it again.   So on the way home we stopped at a Starbucks, visited their giving tree and took the five remaining tags and spent yesterday fulfilling those wishes.  Sleeper jammies for a two year old.  Ear buds for an eighteen year old.  Star Wars lego for an eight year old.  Mittens for a mom.

I was able to give all these gifts away because I told my kids this year we’re not exchanging lots of gifts.  They’re only getting a few things from me.  It’s going to be a simple Christmas.  They were struggling with the idea of not being spoiled until they got to help give to someone else.

I think we can all give something–thanks, love, hope, support.   Those are gifts that cost nothing.  Those are gifts that everyone needs.  And its funny how when we give, we get so much back.

I didn’t give the toys and mittens and jammies so I could be a saint.  I did it because it felt good.  I did it because it filled me with warmth and joy.

And today my heart is so full it feels like it could burst.

So let me give one more gift away here.   It’s a delicious treat to warm both your belly and your heart–a red glazed mug from Starbucks, a Starbucks drink card, a $10 Barnes and Noble gift card, and three incredible Christmas novels by favorite authors Debbie Macomber, Susan Wiggs and Linda Lael Miller.   My Good Tidings blog contest will run through Saturday night and I’ll announce the winner Sunday morning.  The winner MUST get back to me by Monday night  or I’m picking someone else.  So share with me what would bring you joy this holiday season, or what you’re thankful for, and you’re entered.  So good tidings, and love to all.

And by the way, I give thanks for you.

Brrr! Baby, It’s Cold Outside

My new Harlequin Presents is out–Duty, Desire and the Desert King–and I’ve been really busy wrapping gifts, organizing Christmas cards, and planning my son Ty’s birthday party for this weekend.   But wow, it’s chillllllly.  And it sounds like winter weather has hit everywhere.  Snow, ice, freezing conditions.  Rain, mudslides, biting wind.   Not realizing just how cold it was, I sent my two big boys  to school yesterday in shorts and sweatshirts and then turned on the TV to hear that it was only 17 degrees outside.  Felt a little bad for not at least asking boys to put on jeans.  But they survived and today my younger son wore two sweatshirts since all our winter clothes and coats are still in storage.

It took an hour at the post office yesterday, but I mailed 8 huge boxes yesterday to my far flung family–two boxes to San Francisco, one to Palm Springs, one to San Diego, one to LA, and one to North Carolina.   I also mailed blog prizes and some business gifts and I’d like to mail you a gift, too, if you win today’s blog prize.

Because I can’t do any holiday baking without an oven (or kitchen) I’m letting my favorite cookie place, Cheryl & Co send three of my readers yummy yummy holiday cookies.  This is a very short contest.  A one day contest and when I post the winners’ names in the morning you have 12 (only twelve!!)  hours to get back to me with your address, or I’ll pick someone else because I’m not letting these cookies go to waste.

It’s so easy to enter.  Tell me by midnight tonight what treats, sweets, or holiday drinks you find irresistible this time of year.  I personally love love love homemade fudge (without walnuts) and old fashioned pralines.   My mom came from a Southern/Texan family and knew how to make the creamiest smoothest melt-in-your-mouth pralines and I wish I had her recipe because I’d love to try to recreate those.  I love frosted sugar cookies, too, and am craving one right now.  What do you like to nibble on?  What’s your festive drink of choice?  Tell me, and you might be one of three to win some amazing cookies and treats from Cheryl & Co.  The contest ends tonight midnight PST, I’ll announce winners early tomorrow morning and I must hear from you by 7 pm tomorrow night PST or I’m drawing a new name.  Don’t be left in the cold!  Check back in my blog comment section tomorrow morning to see if you won.

Flirting with the Holidays

It’s Saturday, December 5th, and I’ve jut received an email letting me know that the movie Flirting with Forty will air on Lifetime tomorrow on December 6th.   It told me that the movie was one of the top Lifetime films to air in 2008 and based on the book by Jane Porter.

I smiled then.

I still think its odd and funny and wonderful and surreal that one of my books became a fun film loved by many.   The movie premiered Dec 6th last year.  I remember the weekend so clearly.  I was going to attend a movie party at Kelli’s house but I came down sick and had to spend the day in bed.  I’m lucky so many of my friends and readers tuned in to watch it though.  I felt blessed by all the love and support.  I still do, as the party at Ooba’s and then the signing at B&N this last Wednesday was awesome.  So many friends and readers came.  There were new faces and familiar favorite faces and I loved it all–meeting new people and celebrating the season with all.  How lucky I am to have such great people in my life!

Little by little I feel the old me return.  In large part it’s been due to increasing my exercise program.   I’ve stepped up my workouts to 4-6 times a week, and they’re pretty hard core workoutss.   I needed it for my sanity–never mind the fact that I’m not dropping the weight like I’d hoped.  However, every time I work out my spirits lift.  I like the feeling I get when I’m finished.  More up, more energetic, more positive.  Need those positive emotions as the winter days are short here and it’s dark so early in the day.   Need those endorphins to help with the stress of every day life.

Fortunately I’m also finally getting on top of my Christmas shopping and have been wrapping and boxing gifts to mail out to my family this coming week.   Surfer Ty and I also took the boys to see Santa last week and get the requisite photo.  The big boys didn’t want to go, but in the end they gamely agreed to appear in a picture with their baby brother for Mac’s first Christmas.    The boys might not gush about having a baby in the house but I think they secretly love how much their baby brother adores them.  When Jake and Ty are around, Mac has eyes for no one else.

So how are your holiday preparations going?  Started that shopping?  Doing any holiday baking?  Bring me up to speed and you could win my Flirting with the Holidays prize–a signed copy of Flirting, the Flirting DVD movie starring Heather Locklear, a box of Chocolate Macadamia nuts, a $10 B&N gift card, and lots of fun JP goodies.   So share with me what you’re doing and how you’re feeling and you’re entered.  Contest runs through midnight Monday night, Dec 8th and Ill announce the winner Tuesday morning the 9th.   Good luck!
