Movies & Books

Wow!  I’ve received twelve party invites in the last twenty-four hours and am busy making up goodie boxes for everyone who is sending me an invite to their Flirting with Forty premiere party on December 6th.  (For an incredibly cool and original invite check out Melody’s scrapblog invite!)

But Flirting isn’t the only big movie event happening.  I’m really excited about Twilight, the movie based on Stephanie Meyer‘s book.  I’ve read all four of her Twilight series as well as her adult release.

Last night I attended a book club in Woodinville, Washington and every woman there but one had read one or more of the Twilight series.  I was so impressed!  These weren’t teenage readers, either, but women between 40 and 60, all neighbors and friends, many with teenage kids who turned their moms onto the series.  Megan Crane was the one who turned me onto the books and I’m so glad she did.  Last night I had more fun discussing Stephanie’s books than my own which made me think that I should do a fun contest to celebrate the movie Twilight with a Twilight contest.

Twilight by Stephanie MeyerSo here’s the scoop on the contest:  I’m giving away a copy of Twilight, which is the first book in the series,  a small box of yummy See’s chocolates (I have a thing for See’s, especially those Bordeaux), and lots of Jane Porter goodies including my brand new vanilla scented candle perfect to illuminate an indulgent bath.  To be entered in the contest, just post below and I’ll pick a winner tomorrow night and post the winner’s name on Thursday morning.  What to post?  Tell me if you’ve read any of the books yet?  Are you planning on seeing the movie?  Have you even heard about Twilight?  And if you have, who got you to read your first Stephanie Meyer book?

  1. I’ve not heard about Twilight but I’m going to check it out.

As for Flirting debut, I’m having Keri’s friends over to watch it since I gave them copies of the book from one of your signings!

  2. I love these series and have her adult book waiting in the wings as soon as my research projects for this semester are done. I will be going to see the Twilight movie, though I almost always find a book better than a movie. I have your movie on my calendar too. I am looking forward to seeing both movies.

I decided to start reading Stephanie Mewyer when I kept seeing them every place I went (I always look at books everywhere). I was hooked quickly and burned through all 4 books WAY too fast. I was sad to lose my ‘friends’ after such a long friendship and look forward to being reunited during the movie. I have since hooked several friends, including my ex-MIL, who is over 60. Though the books are meant to be young adult books, people of all ages fall in love with them quickly.

  3. Hi Jane!

I haven’t yet read the Twilight series but my 13 year old has read them all about four times each. She loves them and now my 17 year old is hooked on them as well so my curiosity is piqued. I’m hoping to be able to take them to see the movie when it comes to the island.

I hope all is well with you. Take care!

  4. I’ve read all the books. The Host is actually my favorite. I’m definitely going to see the movie- I think it’ll be ok since Stephenie had a say in what direction to take. I picked up Twilight in the early days, before the phenomenon had began, and I convinced my friends to read them.

  5. I haven’t read the books but I have bousht my daughter all of them. She was the first one years ago to have the first one in the series at her high school. She loaned it to some friends and it spread like wild fire.
She went to one of those midnight parties at the bookstore this summer to get the latest in the series at midnight.

She and some friends already have a date to go see Twilight when it comes out on the 21st.
From what she has read in the Entertainment Weekly over the past months she is afraid that Hollywood has butchered a great story.
I told her to try and see the movie and not compare it to the book. Maybe that will help.

I do plan on reading the books but at the moment she has them loaned out to friend.
She is like the public library around here.
Oh, and we have a copy of The Host stephanie Meyer published this year. I guess I need try that one too.

  6. I haven’t read these books, as yet. Not sure why. I’ve heard mixed things. I’ll probably end up reading it, but so far I’ve resisted for whatever reason. 😀 But, if I were to be bribed with chocolate, I’m sure I could manage it!

  7. I haven’t read the series yet, but it sounds great. The movie looks awesome, but I always find the book better than the movie. I would love to win this and start the series.

    Thanks for the contest!

  8. I have read them all (twice) and had to read them all the first time in the span of four days…not an easy thing to do with four little girls and two full time jobs…needless to say my house was a mess and I was behind on laundry for weeks! I felt like I was missing an old friend when I finished the fourth book….TRULY an amazing series!!

  9. I just finished reading Twilight, and can’t wait to read the rest. The best part was the setting in Forks, WA because the vampires can’t hide in sunshine and it is usually dark and cloudy there. They would love today, it is a misty, gloomy day here outside Seattle. I also got a kick out of the vampires going to Goats Rocks near Mt Rainier to kill bears so they could drink their blood instead of humans. I have hiked there and been nervous about bears. The premise about this group of vampires who don’t want to kill humans is a clever idea and the story of a teen pretty much on her own is a compelling one. I am expecting the other books will reveal more of the story behind the rest of the “family” and of course how the main love story of Bella and Edward ends is intriguing. I love a series, as they are entertaining and give a reader something to look forward to, as writers like you, Jane, must appreciate!

  10. I love the Twilight books too! I’m on the 4th one now, Breaking Dawn. My daughter got me started on them and they are hard to put down. Just got reconnected again with an old friend, Kari Anderson, and she told me about your books too. So after the Twilight series, yours are next on my must read list! I’m hoping to see the Twilight movie when it comes soon. 🙂

  11. jane….no i have not heard of the series, but am in need a new book…since i have read all yours 🙂 yes i am getting together with “the girls’ to kick back w.some fine wine and watch flirting with forty…since we can relate to the story & all have had happy endings..

  12. I have heard SO much about Twilight from all of my friends! They all love the books and are obsessed!! I have been meaning to go out and purchase Twilight but have not yet. Maybe I’ll win it instead! 🙂

  13. Jane

I have heard of the books. My bestfriend has been reading borrowed books from a coworker and she loves them and is very excited for the movie to come out. I on the other hand love anything to do with Vampires but have not read the books. I tried to find them at Target once a few weeks ago but didn’t see them. I didn’t really know of course what I was looking for.
I have another friend who has read them front to back a couple of times she loved them so much. As for me Jane. I have not picked up a book to read since summer and it was Mrs. Perfect… GREAT BOOK for those of you who haven’t read it.

  14. I have heard the books are great! I’m usually not into books about vampires, but I was told the books were too good to pass up! They are definetly on my list of books to read!

  15. I’m actually on the second book – New Moon. I won Twilight in a contest. I’d heard a lot about it & thought I’d check it out. I got hooked! Tried to get my teenager to read Twilight but it wasn’t until her AP English teacher mentioned that she had read all 4 books & was looking forward to the movie that my daughter took a sudden interest. Now she’s turning the pages of Twilight while I’m racing through New Moon. Can’t wait for the movie.

  16. I have heard tons of great things about Twilight but have yet to have the opportunity to read it. I am really looking forward to trying it out and hope to get a chance to soon. It sounds amazing!! I won’t see the movie until I have read the book…that’s my rule!!

Looking forward to the Flirting With Forty premiere 🙂

    Much love,
    Melissa

  17. I haven’t read them yet either, but my 14 year old daughter and I were just talking about Twilight this morning! I think we will both have to check it out! As for See’s..Bordeaux are my favorite as well!

  18. Who hasn’t heard of Twilight yet? I’ve read all the books but own none of them…yet 😉 I’m dying to watch movie!

  19. I have not read the Twilight series yet, but heard very good things about the books! Would love to start reading them.
I am currently reading your book Flirting with Forty and love it! I can’t wait for the movie! 🙂

  20. I have not read these yet, but they are the very next ones on my TBR list. All the moms at Mmatthew’s school have been reading and raving about these. It seems they are such a hit with women of all ages. One of my friends had to get her own copies because her daughter loves them so much she won’t lend them out to ANYONE!!

  21. i read the first Twighlight book and my daughter has read all of them so far. We dont own them though so that would be nice to win one…My friend Nikki who is 26 yrs old first told me about the Twilight books and so I read it and then my daughter saw me with the book and wanted to read it and then she got hooked even more than me. We are going to the movie!

  22. Hi Jane! What fun! I am so glad to hear of another good author and all the comments about her books. I have not read them, but would love to. They sound good. But, I have read your books. Flirting with Forty is my favorite. Such a great read, made me laugh, giggle, cry and feel very very normal. I have the movie date marked on my calendar. Can’t wait to watch it!!

  23. I have read all of the Twilight Series and loved them so much I bought The Host as well. I have gotten my mother addicted to the series. Now I just need to get Mom-in-law to read the books. My mom and I are going to see the movie when it releases on the 21st. Hubby does not want to read the books, but wants to see the movie, so I’ll probably go a second time with him. I think initially Teresa Medeiros posted the recommendation that led me to Twilight. Go Team Edward!

  24. Hi Jane
I haven’t read any of the series but so would love to and the chocolate and Jane Goodies sound so wonderful. And – good luck with the Flirting with Forty Premiere, it will be just brilliant. I loved the book & can’t wait to see the movie 🙂
    All the best,
    Tracey

  25. I haven’t read the series yet, but it sounds great. The movie looks awesome; I would love to win this and start the series. It sounds good from what everyone is saying.

  26. Jane,

I haven’t read Twilight, but I did see it at the book store. The cover seemed kind of different to me. I will have to add it to my list.

Working on a group of people for a catching Flirting with Forty. I can’t wait for the release and have put it in my planner.

  27. I’ve read all of these books, Jane–the first three quite a few times. And I read them while I was pregnant with my daughter–a great guilty pleasure (the books AND my daughter). :o)

I so plan to see the movie, and have already told the hubby he’s watching the baby while I’m out salivating over Edward and Bella’s relationship on that, what, 60-foot-wide screen?

I don’t think any person got me to read Twilight. I think the momentum finally prodded me to pick up the book. I’m sure glad I did!

  28. I keep picking them up in Borders and then putting them down. I want to read them… really want to read them, its just that I have a requested full due at Mills & Boon and an entry for the Golden Heart to finish. So I walk past them and promise myself that one day I can pick them up.

  29. My friends are all hooked on it but I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any yet. I am torn between seeing it in the theater or waiting to read the books. I know that once you watch the movie it’s hard to go back to the books.

  30. Jane I haven’t read the series yet, but I own all four of them. I bought them for my 13 year old daughter. I do plan on reading them when she is finished. We are planning to see the movie as well, maybe I should say, she is planning to attend the movie with her friends and I will probably have to go to a separate showing alone. You know how teenagers can be! I have heard that all four books are simply addicting! Can’t wait to get started on them.

  31. Hi Jane!
I am reading Mrs. Perfect at the moment and before that I was reading Flirting with forty! I am also reviewing them soon!(be prepared for a great review)
Hope I can enter your contest here!

  32. What a fantastic invite from Melody. That’s a talented gal!!

I haven’t read any of the Twilight books yet but one of my co-workers read them one weekend and barely moved from the couch for two days!

    LeAnne

  33. Twilight,Breaking Dawn, New Moon, Eclipse… these books are fabulous. These books moved me. It’s the first time I’ve read a book and actually felt the flutters one gets when they meet someone special. It was amazing! I hope Stephanie Meyer continues to create, and I can’t wait to read The Host!
    Thanks for the contest Jane!

  34. One of my book club girls (Ana)has read them with her daughter and she’s been telling me to read them. I guess I’ll have to now!

In fact, I may be taking her daughter and their foreign exchange student to see the movie at midnight on the 21st!

  35. Hi Jane!

I’ve read the first two books in the Twilight series and have the fourth on my shelf but need to buy the third so I can continue reading it! I absolutely LOVE the books and I’m pushing 45. My niece who is now 19 but was 17-18 at the time expressed an interest in the series and told me about it and when I found out it was about vampires I knew I had to check it out.

I’ve been a long time Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles fan and generally enjoy most intelligently written stories about those sexy blood suckers! LOL Just the other day I found out from my best friend who lives in Australia that her 11 year old son read the first 3 Twilight series books in just a few days and was so completely smitten with them that she was a little worried. Her son is extremely bright and reads at a university level so I told her not to worry that he can handle them and now we’ll have something else we can talk about on Facebook! Stephenie Meyer’s series is definitely FOR EVERYONE!! I am going to see the movie for sure!

  36. Wow, I’ve have not read this series. I love vampire stories, I’m going to have to read the books before I see the movie, the books are always so, so much better. My new favorite tv series is True Blood, even though the books are way better.

  37. I actually heard it was a good book from my friend and decided to take a peak now I’m in love with bella and edwards story its so romantic that even though he’s a vampire she still wants to be with him. I’ve read all the summerys seen all the trailers next stop the library!

  38. I have heard of twilight, although I am really a strong reader of your books and am promoting them where and when I can. A lot of my friends are reading twilight – it looks tempting!
    Keep up the good work.
    Jennifer

  39. I have never heard of the series until just recently. All this attention has sparked my interest so I guess I will have to look into it. I have two teenage boys but they’re into Tom Clancy and my daughter has just turned 10 and probably not ready for the series-but I can get a head start on them for her!

  40. I just recently learned about the series and Stephanie Myer. I have all her books on my to read list, so I would be grateful to win one! I do want to see the movie too, just learned this week that the movie was coming out.

    Thanks!

  41. Jane, the Twilight series is my favorite set of books next to yours – and I’m not just saying that. When I first read Odd Mom Out, I had it from the library for around 4 extra weeks because I just kept rereading it. I of course now own all 4 of yours, and can and do pick them up anytime and reread. Twilight – I read them straight through in about a week for all four – and then began rereading Twilight followed by the other three. If you have not read Midnight Sun, do so immediately before seeing the movie (next Friday I am so stoked!); it is Twilight rewritten from Edward’s point of view, and can only be found on Stephenie Meye’s website, and is ony 250+ pages long because it got leaked and she supposedly got pissed and stopped writing it.

  42. I have read all four of the Twilight books (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn). I actually was at the beach and wanted a book to read. I saw twilight and decided to get that and it was FANTASTIC. I am planning to see the movie. Hopefully the day it comes out, if I can get tickets.

  43. I have read all of the twilight books, and needless to say I love them! My friends and I are planning to attend the midnight showing of the new twilight movie. We are absolutely ecstatic. Anyways, i don’t tend to go with the trend; I might get to something popular (e.g. twilight) eventually. All of my friends but me had read twilight, and telling me I should read it, but i never got around to it. Then I had a sleep over with my cousin and she had the first three twilight books. After I started them, I couldn’t put them down, and almost literally pulled New moon from my cousin’s hands so I could read it. My favorite books are, by far, Breaking Dawn and Twilight.

  44. I’ve been hearing so much about the movie I was just about to go get the first book. Thanks for the chance to win one!

  45. And we have a winner! Our number 26 poster, Tracey, was picked by the roll of the Transformer Monopoly dice! Tracey I rolled a two and then a six, and that’s you. Please shoot me a private email with your mailing address and I’ll get the book, candy and goodies out in the next mail. This was such a fun contest I might have to do another one today!!
