California, Here I Come!

Tomorrow morning Ty Gurney, Mac and I jump on a plane for Fresno, California so I can make a book club event in Visalia Wednesday night and then Thursday morning we race down to Southern California for 4 more days of book events.

I’ve got a very fun 5 pm Happy Hour for my readers and friends planned this Friday in Laguna Beach before my book signing at Laguna Beach Books and then Saturday I have another casual reader get-together before my Barnes & Noble signing in Oceanside. ย If you can, round up some girlfriends or family members and join me! I’ve got full details on my site with the where, when and what, or you can also email me to get the scoop.

If you’re able to attend Friday night’s party and signing in Laguna, I have a terrific bonus: ย two of my favorite people in the world will be nibbling on nachos and sipping cold drinks with me–close friends and amazing authors, Megan Crane/Caitlin Crews and Liza Palmer–will be there, so if you haven’t met them yet, this is your chance!

Jane, her cousin Jennifer Lyles, and her aunt, Rebecca Lyles at the 2008 Laguna Beach booksigning

On Saturday I’m presenting a workshop to the San Diego RWA chapter (again, details are here on my site) so if you are a writer, or an aspiring writer, sign up to attend and spend the day chatting books and crafts with me, Megan and Liza, and the wonderful San Diego chapter.

While in Southern California I’ll be joining two more book clubs for book discussions–one in Irvine and one near Riverside–and….

…I’ll be house hunting.

That’s right.

This June I’m moving with the boys down to Southern California! After 15 years in Bellevue, I’m going to be starting a new chapter in a coastal town somewhere between Laguna and La Jolla. My house goes on the market early February and but we won’t leave Washington until the end of the school year.

I’ll share more about the changes in the coming weeks, but for now, I’ve got to take a big breath, stay calm, and focus on the fact that in the end, this move is the right thing for all of us. In Southern California Ty can teach surfing, and eventually open a Orange County/San Diego branch of his surf school and my son Jake, who lives and breathes water polo, can play in a place where its a respected school sport instead of just a club sport. Son Ty is pretty worried and will need lots of support. I will, too. I have great friends here in Bellevue and amazing readers and it’ll be so hard to leave them, but at least I can look forward to being closer to my family–and Ty’s family–again.

California, here we come!

And in the meantime, I’ve got a bunch of fun reader boxes of prizes and goodies to give away! ย I have 2 Mrs. Perfect escape prizes–a signed copy of Mrs. Perfect, bath soap and salts, and more to give away PLUS 3 mystery prizes that weren’t collected in December. ย This is a short contest, ending Thursday night so be sure to post a comment to enter and I’ll announce the 5 winners Friday!!

  1. Wow – that’s big news. We will miss you up here for sure. I hope that doesn’t mean you won’t be going to ECWC in the Fall anymore.

However, I hope it does mean that you will find a new warmth and happiness in this new adventure. Sending out positive thoughts and prayers are headed out to all of you!

  2. all the best to you with your move. i’ve done two pretty big out of state moves. the first one was way harder than the second one though. i’m sure you’ll all make some new friends and your families will appreciate having you closer in proximity. good luck with selling your house too.

“mrs. perfect” was my favorite of your books, so i would love to win this new prize. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Oh what a wonderful move… I love La Jolla, was lucky to visit a long time ago when my best friend did her undergrad at UCSD. And you’ll be consolidating your family base!

And you know what? You’ll have great friends and amazing readers no matter where you go.

  4. That’s is Great! Change is good, sometimes we have a hard time with it!

Keep up with the positive thoughts! And everything will fall into place! Sounds like a busy year for you all already!
    Wishing you all the BEST!

    California here I come too!
Every year my good friend from high school and I get together. I think she already has the weekend all planned out.

So driving down to San Diego is not something in the plans, since she is located in the beach cities(Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo, Palos Verdes) right out of LAX.

As much as I would love to finally meet You, Megan, and Liza. I guess I will have to try for another time, there will be another time for sure!

Have A GREAT TIME! And Happy House Hunting!

Where does the time go?? It is already the second week in January. WOW!

I better finish up some Thank you cards and get back to work!

    Safe travels! Take care!!

  5. I’m so loooking forward to seeing you at the RWA chapter meeting this Sat! And congrats on the move to So. Cal. I live in San Diego (have my whole life) and it sounds like it will be a great move for your entire family. Best wishes on finding the perfect place between La Jolla and Laguna. I’m sure you’ll have lots of great options. See you on Sat and have a great time at your Friday event in Laguna.

  6. As Kathryn in Montreal said, “And you know what? Youโ€™ll have great friends and amazing readers no matter where you go.” I definitely concur. It just takes awhile to settle in. Change isn’t easy (especially a move of this magnitude), but we/you are resilient. You can do it!!!

  7. Oh my goodness, Jane!!! That is so exciting!!!!! I am so happy for you! I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to live in sunny southern California!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I cannot wait to hear all about house hunting!
Have a wonderful trip!! I will, hopefully, get to attend one of your events in Minneapolis in March! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. That’s exciting news! I’m glad things will work out better for you in CA. I’m sure you won’t miss the rain, will you? ๐Ÿ™‚
Good luck house hunting. I remember just how stressful it can be (we did that a year ago.) But it is the BEST feeling when you find that perfect house….I am so thankful we found ours! Have a great week!!!

  9. Oh Jane this is exciting news, moving to the sun and fun. I am so sick of snow right now where I live I could about go there myself. Its snowing outside right now. I want some warm sunshine. Hope everything goes well with the house hunting and the move.

  10. That is wonderful news, Jane. Wishing you all the best for this change in your life and hoping that it brings you much happiness, peace of mind and a great future. I know that this move will be lovely, sunshine, the beach and a bright and fun life.

  11. I love Mrs Perfect, second only to Frog Prince in my heart!

I am so happy & excited for you and the boys to be moving to Southern Calfifornia somewhere between Laguna and La Jolla, only two of my most favorite places to vacation. I would love to live there! Bellevue is wonderful, too, but this is a positive change! It will be wonderful.

  12. How exciting! I wish you good luck in your house hunting, I hope you find the perfect home for you and your family ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. You’ll have plenty of support, not to worry and son Ty will adapt, maybe not at first but will have so many more things to do in California. I’m a California girl too…moved there twice in between Florida and now here in VA. The whole family as a group will be so much better off in the long run. You’ll have all your following, your friends and new friends that the whole family will meet. You’ll be able to have your doors and windows open and you’ll be near water too…paradise for sure. I am soooo excited for you and the new fun life and less commuting. You’ve got a plan and it’ll work….good luck and have fun with the group gatherings, wish I was there! All the best…Ruth

  14. Moving to a new state is always exciting and moving closer to family makes it not so scary. Congratulations and have a safe trip to CA!

  16. Moving to a new state is always exciting and moving closer to family makes it not so scary. Congratulations and have a safe trip to CA!
    Happy New Year!

  17. Congratulations on moving. It sounds like it will be perfect for everyone. I know it will be hard to leave some place you’ve been so long, but in the end it’ll be well worth it. I can’t wait to hear more after you get settled. Have a great time on your book signings and parties. I still hope to get to meet you if you ever make it to Dallas again.

  18. WOW! Sounds like a busy but fun year is in store for you. Good luck with the house hunting and selling. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Wow, Jane, lots of changes for you! California does sound like a good place for your family and it’s gotta have more sun than Washington. But I sure don’t envy you packing everything up and moving. Breathe and stay calm โ€“ easier said than done. But by this time next year, it will all be a memory, and a good one at that, I’m sure.

  20. Have fun and good luck with the workshop.

I’m really happy for you. I hope your move and Ty’s business is successful. I just relocated and it sure it a chore but worth it all.

  21. Wow that is awesome…what a great new adventure you will starting on. Good Luck and it is great to see that you will all be together as a family. Best Wishes!

  22. How exciting. I bet your son Ty will be worrying himself for nothing. Just think of your life as a book and the move to California is just getting to chapter 3 (the good part really begins in chapter 3).

I can’t wait to hear what happens next. Maybe the house will sell quickly.

  23. It sounds like you are getting yourself ready for this new chapter in your life. A coastal town in Southern California sounds pretty good, especially after all the Washington gray and rain that we sometimes get here quite often. Being able to be with Ty will be good for your family too. I hope the big boys do well with the move. I’ve heard that as long as the parents are happy about it and give the kids good support then they will adjust quickly. I look forward to hearing about these new changes coming your way. ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Jane!! How exciting and yes, scary for you all!! Change is never easy, even when we volunteer for it, but just trust that you are making the right decision for all involved. I’ve found that whenever I make a leap of faith, Spirit always catches me!! I’m contemplating a move of my own…to Honolulu! We’ll see…

Until then, I’ll look forward to seeing you here in So Cal. =)

All the best to you, Ty and your adorable tribe!

  25. Found a quote for you:

โ€œIt is only when we stretch that we grow, but this can be painful because it takes us out of our comfort zone.โ€

  26. Hi Jane!

Such exciting news! I know you are worried about little Ty, but I’m sure he’ll be really happy there. I hope Ty G’s surf school is wildly successful! Good luck selling your house and have fun house shopping! Sending lots of positive thoughts your way. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Lynn

  27. So exciting to hear that you and your family is planning on moving to So Cal! I live here in Los Angeles area. Hope to see you around while you live here. Have a great house hunting. Cant wait to hear more about that.

    Christy

  28. Hola Jane.
Wow! How exciting is that. California…It will be fun. I know when my husband moved us from Austin, Tx to Shreveport, La I was scarred as hell. It took me a few weeks to make some life long friends and now when I think about it I am glad to got to go.

  29. Wow, Jane,
We won’t be “neighbors” any longer. I am always thinking I might see you at BelSquare, B&N or Starbucks.
California sounds like the right move for you and your family, so good luck and happy house hunting! Glad you were here and wrote Odd Mom Out and Mrs. Perfect about the area because that is why I started reading your books, and now I read them all, no matter if they are set in Texas, L.A. or ??! What about seeing your name in screen or tv credits – is that in your future?

  30. Hi Jane,
Congrats on your upcoming move. We both know it will be stressful but in the end well worth the change. Keep your patience in check.
    Melinda

  31. Exciting news Jane, CONGRATS!! It must be so great to be able to visit and be near your family. And the weather must be beautiful not to mention just the ambiance and the people ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun!!

  32. Wow Jane! That is very big and exciting news! Congratulations on your move. It will be all worth it in the end when you have your extended family close by. Wishing you all the best as you take on another adventure!

  33. Wow!! Exciting news! It sounds like it will be an exciting time. Good luck! Moving is alot of work but in the end it’s always the right decision.

  34. Jane, wish I knew you were touring California. We would have loved to have host an event here on the Central Coast for you! Glad to hear things are going well, must be tough to leave a home that you just finished remodeling.

Well it will be great to have you closer and maybe I can actually attend some of your oh so fun events!

Wishing you safe travels…hugs to you all, this will be a tough year.

  35. It will be easy jane when you compare it to a move overseas to a foreign country and you are alone. It makes you more appreciative, tolerant and independent. Enjoy

  36. So happy for you! Congratulations on your brave decision to start life anew and explore your dreams. Funny, just heard tonight a line on a tv show something about there “not being endings so much as lots of beginnings”. Do hope you will have a “Moving On/Bon Voyage/Good Luck” gathering at Ooba’s so we can say goodbye in person. Love and Hugs,
    Mary J.

  37. Congratulations! I know this has all been in the works for a while, but moving is scary to anyone. (And of course kids aren’t programmed to look at the big picture.) We have all kinds of faith in you–you’re organized and you’re brave!

  38. Hi Jane,
Wow, that really is big news. You are choosing a wonderful area to move to. I graduated from UC Irvine (NCAA water polo champs!) and lived in the OC for many years. I grew up in the beach cities so I know you’ll love it. Being closer to family is always a plus too.

Have fun house hunting. There are some beautiful homes in the areas you are looking!

    Best,
    Michelle

  39. wow jane! so happy for you that you will be moving your family to start a new chapter in your lives…it definitely sounds like the right thing to do for yourself and them. i know it won’t be easy when it happens, but i am sure you will have the love and support of your family, friends, readers, and everyone who has ever had the chance to meet you. congratulations! have a wonderful signing/reader event!

  40. I am excited for you and your family. I am sure the move will be full of wonderful new adventures!I plan on moving back home to Fl when I finish my degree in 2014 and my boys will be nervous as well but it will be a vast new world of oppurtunities as will California for you and yours. Happy house hunting, Jane! May women never cease to enrich their life experiences no matter how many calendars we recycle.

  41. WOW!! How exciting for you and your family. Don’t let all the changes overwhelm you. Take it a step at a time.
    Enjoy your trip.

  42. I wish I could travel to meet you bot can’t for I have alot going myself, classes and starting over a new leaf in my life, too. I know the feeling of being nervious, for I’m going thru a divorce and not sure of the outcome but its a fresh start and its along time coming. I’m happy for your next move, especially to be close to family. I moved away after my mom died for I couldn’t live in my hometown for too many memories, and I wanted to see my mom and she wasn’t around. I know you’ll be fine once you are settled, you’ll meet new friends and the kids will too.
have fun, I have cousins who live in La Jolla, never been there and heard its beautiful. One of my wishes to visit there one of these days. I’d love to win this package for I haven’t read Mrs. Perfect, the only book I haven’t read yet! Have fun!!!

  43. Jane,

Youโ€™re not leaving readers behind. Loyal readers will follow you anywhere.
This has to be one of the biggest emotional roller coaster rides of a lifetime. Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s exciting, scary, happy, and sad all rolled up into one. But you and the family will be fine. You are closing a chapter in your life and opening up to a new blank page of the next chapter. Fill it with love, understanding, patience, and make new wonderful memories of happiness and Ty will grow up and tell you as an adult that this move was the best thing ever and possibly even thank you for it. Best of wishes!

  44. Hi Jane,

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to Southern California!!!
I am so excited for you, this is so cool!!! I know change is hard sometimes but this is a good change!!
You will be okay. Someone told me the other day that sometimes we have to just “put our big girl panties on” and do what we have to do. I am so happy for you. Enjoy!!!

  45. Wow, that is exciting news and it sounds like after a little time adjusting, things will be perfect for you and your family.

    Have a safe trip!

  46. Moving is both terrifying and exciting, at least for me! Best of luck, with your writing, your move, and your book events. I look forward to reading more of your tales!

  47. How exciting, and stressful at the same time, I am sure! In the end, it will be great for you and your family. You and your son will adjust in time. It’s a fun new adventure for all of you–best of luck!

  48. Wow Jane that’s big news. We will miss you here in WA. I hope you will be coming back for book tours. Wishing you the best. Going to check out Ty’s new shop when in Hawaii in March. Ready to be away from this snow and see some sunshine. Good luck!

  49. Best of luck on your impending move. I know from experience that it is a fun and exciting time but also a little bit scary esp. for the kids. We stayed in La Jolla a few years ago on vacation and absoluted loved it.

  50. Good luck with the move ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope it will go smoothly and with minimum stress and like you said in the end it’s the right thing for your family.

  51. How scary and exciting at the same time to be moving…But on definie plus side is having so much family close. I look forward to hearing about how thing come together.

Have a safe trip & productive trip.

    ~Lorie

  52. Holy Toledo -Wow!Such big news! It takes so much nerve to do this when you have an entire, big family like you do. Let’s see- can you do this without crying?? Not – we know how emotional you are. Can you do this smiling all the time? – not. It requires to much energy to smile all the time but more energy to frown all the time.My nerves are shot just talking about it – but goodness – look at the last few years of your life – now that was awesome!
Bottom line is this – you can do anything you put your mind to and God willing this will be a breeze. Take care and love to you and your beautiful family

    Patricia (Bad Mommy Patricia)

  53. we simply must get a better photo of us, now that we’re all slimmer and trimmer than we were October 2009!! [:

can’t wait to see you, Jane!

  54. Hi Jane, That’s big news! I’ve loved reading your books and getting to know Bellevue. I look forward to reading your new books with California details in there. Good luck to you and your family!

  55. Congratulations on all the changes that you and the family will be taking on, Jane! Sounds like it is the right decision for you all. Have a great time on your minibook tour and I hope you find a great place in CA!

  56. That’s awesome Jane! Best of luck with all that goes with selling and moving! It sounds very exciting! Have a great time in CA with your signings and all. Travel safely!

  57. Wow, what a big change! Very exciting for your family and yes, it will be good for you all to be closer to the rest of your families. Sending lots of support! We’ll miss you up in this neck of the woods, I hope you make some stops up here once in a while. Would love to take one of your workshops sometime.
    Happy 2011!

  58. Wow! How exciting that your family can finally live together! And at the beach! Happy for you all! Glad you’ll be closer to Visalia, too! Now get busy writing…I need a Jane Porter fix!

  59. Jane –
All my best to you on your new venture! You will be missed greatly here in Washington! Sad to have you move but wish you and your family all the best. Good luck house hunting. Can’t wait to hear what you find. Happy that this move will be very positive for your family and aligns with all the things they love to do. Know you will be missed!

  60. Wow, moving can be so stressful! Best wishes and good luck… Nothing beats being close to family that’s good to you, for sure…

  61. Yay! Big exciting news for you guys! Congratulations on the decision to move.

Just wanted to let you know that I just finished reading She’s Gone Country…really enjoyed it. Great story, even if it was a little hard for me to read. Even though my boys are still young, I already feel like they are on the cusp of being teenagers and I am already worrying about some of the same issues in your book. Loved it though!
    N

  62. Yay!! You will be moving to my part of the world! Everytime you have something planned in SOCAL,
I cannot make it for some reason or another. My sister lives Oceanside but will be in Monterrey this weekend, so we will miss you. Good luck house hunting!

  63. Wishing you an easy transition. Change is good and in this case it will be great. Many blessings to you and your family and thanks for the great giveaway ๐Ÿ™‚

    mrsjohnson1982 at yahoo dot com

  64. I’m looking forward to reading “She’s gone country” and I wish you all the best- on the book tour and the upcoming move!

  65. Where near Riverside…It doesn’t say on your workshop/event tab???

So glad you’re coming to California….Today it is 71 degrees with a beautiful blue sky…

  66. You’ve got some exciting stuff going on! I’m buying my first house right now. I got lucky and found one in my price range that is currently being built so I get all brand new everything and get to pick everything out! I’m so excited!

I’m also jealous of all this Cali time you’re getting and going to be getting! I live in Indiana and it’s currently 19 degrees right now! I also wish you would come do a book signing in my area. I’d love to meet you!

  67. Hey beautiful, congrats on so many things! I’m excited for you, and you have to know your readers will always love you no matter where you hang your hat kiddo. We might only be “virtual support” but we are always here for you.
Change is hard, but it sounds as though this change will bring about so much happiness for you.

Enjoy your book signings and your time with Ty and Mac, and most of all house hunting. :o)

    peace out

  68. I know change can be difficult and worrisome but it sounds like some great things will come from it. Good luck with the house hunting.

  69. Wow, that sounds exciting! As a single Mom, I made the decision to move from Michigan to the Gulf coast of Florida while my son was still in high school last year. It was terrifying and exciting at the same time! Change can be so tough, but also so worth the effort. I always wanted to live somewhere warmer and by the ocean. We love it here in Venice Florida. Please consider coming this way in the future for a book signing. You have lots of fans here too. Sending prayers your way!

    1. Denise, my son and I will be moving there the summer before his highchool year from Kansas in 2014. I look at real estate all the time but I will be nervous as heck when the move gets closer. It won’t be real to me until I place my home on the market and graduate. I begin listing my house a year before we move. Was your son scared when he entered the school there?

      1. Hi Gena. That is so exciting! We made the move just before my son started his junior year in high school. He had so many friends in Michigan that I felt so guilty moving, but he was willing to give it a try, thank God. Turns out he is doing better than ever!!! The schools here are excellent. He keeps in contact with his other friends via x-Box 360 live which is awesome. We take a trip in the summer for him to visit his friends and we have also drove a friend back with us for a visit. It’s worked out great. Please keep in touch and let me know how it’s going.

  70. Wow Jane ~ Very exciting news!

I hope that everything goes smoothly for you and your family.
I already thought that you live in an amazingly beautiful place, but San Diego is just as great! It seems like it makes a lot of sense for you all too. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Good luck!!

  71. Wow! That’s an exciting move! I have family in WA, but I’ve never been to CA – I hope you love it there.

I haven’t read Mr. Perfect yet, that would be a lovely prize pack for here in the snowy yucky midwest!

  72. Hey Jane!! :0) That is awesome that you are making the move!! I thought it sounded like such a long wait when you said back in May that you would wait 7 yrs until Ty graduated high school and headed off to college to move down south!! Moves are crazy, but change is good. And the fact that you will all be together finally makes the whole thing even greater!! The stress will pass.

Start weeding out now though, lol. My sister has been down-sizing ‘stuff’ in their move from FL to NJ and she still isn’t done. That started back in June. You are a trooper though, so I know you and crew will make it through unscathed. So exciting!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  73. Wow! That’s so exciting! I wish you the best luck with the move. The change of weather will be a nice one compared to Washington’s weather. I hope the older boys are adjusting to the idea, leaving friends is a tough thing to do at any age.

  74. WOW. I kept thinking that since we lived in the same state one of these days I would meet you. ๐Ÿ™

On the other hand, I am so very happy for your family and the chance that you will all be together now. I moved away from family and friends to California when I was 17 fresh out of high school. Big difference between California and Oregon (where I grew up) but it grows on you and I grew to love it there. Ty will too. Good luck to you all. ๐Ÿ™‚

  75. It sounds like your destiny! And you know the ironies of life…your son Ty could be the one who looks back later and decides moving to Southern California was the most awesome move ever! I loved your novella, One Christmas Night in Venice.

  76. Wow! I’m so-so-so excited for you Jane! what a joyful exciting time for you all. Good luck house hunting- I loved that part when we were getting ready to move. I know you’ll find the perfect place for you and your boys. Great big calming joyful hugs to you all.

  77. What exciting news! Wishing you the best of luck finding that perfect house and starting a new life in CA!
    Have a great week!

  78. I am so proud of you!! Starting a new adventure takes guts and faith. You have both, girlfriend. We are all behind you and will keep you in our prayers and think good thoughts! Think of all you have learned and done. This is just another journey, a step on the big learning curve. You are teaching your great life lessons too! 2011 will be fabulous.

  79. Congratulations and Welcome Back! I know that your son will love being in So Cal and playing the best sport in the world….water polo!

Just be there for your son Ty, and help him as he makes new friends and adapts to a new world. You are a strong, loving and supportive family and all of us will be here to offer words of encouragement!!

Again, congratulations, and welcome back and welcome HOME <3

    Love from the Central Valley!
    Kim

  80. WOW!! Congrats and best of luck on the move. I just recently moved to another state and it was crazy but fun looking for a place to stay other than a hotel. Now I can take my time looking for a house. ANd have fun with your reader event. I’m sure a good time will be had by all!

  81. I just had to write this because it made me laugh…… I must have checked your page 4 times today for the winner…… can we say get a life? hahaha. (joking. I’m just sick in bed and bored.) Hope you have a great weekend! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. ๐Ÿ™‚ thank you nova! It’s what I get for going outside with my hair wet- and wearing short sleeves. (per my mother.) lol

  82. I just popped on to check for the winners and noticed my entry appeared three times. There must have been a computer glitch. I wasn’t trying to increase my odds by posting 3x. Have a great weekend!

      1. I know you’re kidding, Kit, but I do feel terrible. I’m really a very honest person. I have no clue why one post turned into three. Anyway, you know I will be excluded now..ha! Have a great weekend!

      2. Hey Kit and Jill,

You guys are too funny! I’m sitting here reading comments from Barnes & Noble in Oceanside (my event starts soon) and giggling. I love my readers. You guys are the best!

        Jane

  86. OMG, Congratualtions on your upcoming move back home! Orange blossom summers and mild lovely winters, sitting outside with your Starbucks watching the waves. It doesn’t get much better!

  87. Wow… somehow I missed this post. I’m sad to hear that you’ll be leaving the PNW, but happy for your family. You have been a lovely supporter of local charities, and I have appreciated all you’ve done for us. Thanks so much.
